ADULT CLASS DESCRIPTIONS:

Capoeira Batuque: Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art form which combines different aspects of martial art, dance, music, capoeira and acrobatics. Capoeira Batuque is the longest standing academy in Southern California and the heartbeat of Brasil Brasil Cultural Center. This art form, which was developed by the slaves as they were learning to fight and protect themselves, was disguised as a dance accompanied to music since it was illegal to practice any kind of Martial Art.

Samba: Samba is a Brazilian dance and musical genre with it’s roots in Africa & Brazil. It is recognized in the world as a symbol of Brazil and the Brazilian Carnival. Considered one of the most popular Brazilian cultural expression, Samba has become an icon of Brazilian national identity.

Axé Fit Dance: Join Amen Santo for a journey to Bahia Brazil. Sweat yourself into shape using the vibrations & energetic rhythms of Salvador Bahia! This is class is a great workout, as there are many fitness movements to lift the booty, tighten the abs, and the use of rhythm sticks for the arms and upper body. It’s also a great way to learn Axé music and dances that are very popular in Bahia Brazil.

Zumba: Zumba® Fitness – When participants see a Zumba class in action, they can’t wait to give it a try. Zumba classes feature exotic rhythms set to high-energy Latin and international beats. Before participants know it, they’re getting fit and their energy levels are soaring! There’s no other fitness class like a Zumba Fitness-Party. It’s easy to do, effective and totally exhilarating, often building a deep-rooted community among returning students.

Afro-Brazilian Dance: The traditional Afro-Brazilian dances of the Orixas (Deities) are transmitted and studied through dance and rhythm.  With a strong emphasis on movement, this workshop align the body, mind and soul, as the dance surfaces from the inner emotions.  While slave owners banned African rituals, slaves found ways to disguise their true beliefs, using dance and music to escape and free themselves from hard times.

Kickboxing: Kickboxing is a combines martial arts and stand up combat sports based on kicking and punching. Kickboxing is practiced for self defense, general fitness, or as a contact sport.

Cardio Carnival: This class is a combination of socca, reggae, salsa and merengue with an emphasis on reggae and socca. Corey uses the basic movements from these form of dance in a follow along cardio workout. It’s design to strengthen your core and teach you how to groove to the sounds of the Carribean.

Drumming: In this powerful drumming workshop, you will gain knowledge of a broad range of rhythms from traditional and contemporary Afro-Brazilian sounds. Using the wide variety of percussion instruments, this workshop focus on the mesmerizing Candomble rhythms, the smooth Samba Reggae pulse and the energetic Samba de Roda.  Let your spirits be lifted by these powerful Afro-Brazilian beats!

West African Dance: Immerse yourself in the beautiful and powerful traditional dances of West African. Learn the rhythms to different dances and their meanings. Live drumming.

Ladies Happy Hour: Restore & Renew: This class is designed for the independent mama who is able to get away from it all. In this hour long class, we will focus solely on YOU– restoring and strengthening with fun and funky grooves, stretching, toning, and core work specific to healing. You will leave feeling re-energized, reset, and ready to face your world with joy and ease.

Filipino Martial Art: Experience the devastating martial art of Kali, the Filipino Martial Art that uses edged weapons and force multipliers to enhance your self defense training. Sensei Alvin is a certified instructor under martial arts legend Guro Dan Insosanto. In this class you will be introduced to the fighting Styles of the Philippines. Learn how to turn anything in your hands as a tool to protect yourself in any situation.

Brazilian Zouk: Brazilian Zouk is a dance that developed from the Brazilian dance Lambada. The dance is now combined with a variety of music, including Caribbean Zouk music, which is how the dance came to be known as Zouk. We have two Brazilian Zouk teachers: Clinton & Cristi that have just moved here from Rio de Janeiro. Please welcome them to the BBCC family.

YOUTH CLASS DESCRIPTIONS:

Youth Capoeira Batuque: This mindful program is designed to expose children to the dynamic art form of Capoeira and all it’s wonders. Not only do the children learn Martial Art, they also learn acrobatics, dance, berimbau & percussive instruments, singing, history and Portuguese. They learn to function within a community and participate in several events throughout the year. This program requires a commitment from children and families. Graduation is once year in May.

Youth Parkour: Parkour is a discipline founded in France by David Belle in the 1990’s. In some places Parkour has been defined as the “fluidity and efficiency of human movement.” Others have given it a more explicative definition by saying it is, “The art of moving effectively through the environment using only the human body to overcome obstacles,” and/or “Moving from one point to another as smoothly, efficiently and quickly as possible using the abilities of the human body.”

Youth Hip Hop/BBoy & BGirl: Learn the basics of hip-hop dance technique, learn to perform movements on the beat, and learn the secret techniques of BBoy/BGirl footwork and power moves!!! This class is for beginning and intermediate level youth ages 7 to 12 years. This class is supervised by Amy “Catfox” Campion (aka Professora Raposa) and will be taught by various experienced teachers from Antics including (but not limited to) Catfox.

Youth Shield Karate: The mission of Shield Karate is to help children grow into healthy, happy, successful adults by teaching a martial art lifestyle of fitness, self-confidence, compassion, and respect.
