YOUTH CLASS DESCRIPTIONS:
Youth Capoeira Batuque: This mindful program is designed to expose children to the dynamic art form of Capoeira and all it’s wonders. Not only do the children learn Martial Art, they also learn acrobatics, dance, berimbau & percussive instruments, singing, history and Portuguese. They learn to function within a community and participate in several events throughout the year. This program requires a commitment from children and families. Graduation is once year in May.
Youth Parkour Culver City: Parkour is a discipline founded in France by David Belle in the 1990’s. In some places Parkour has been defined as the “fluidity and efficiency of human movement.” Others have given it a more explicative definition by saying it is, “The art of moving effectively through the environment using only the human body to overcome obstacles,” and/or “Moving from one point to another as smoothly, efficiently and quickly as possible using the abilities of the human body.”
Youth Culver City Ballet: Culver City Youth Ballet serves the West Los Angeles area with excellent classical dance training. Our goal is to nurture and inspire the seriously minded ballet student. We provide your children with a safe space to be creative, deepen their love for dance, and most importantly have fun. We see beyond the dancer in our class, we see the next generation of leaders, innovators, and artists!
ADULT CLASS DESCRIPTIONS:
Capoeira Batuque: Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art form which combines different aspects of martial art, dance, music, capoeira and acrobatics. Capoeira Batuque is the longest standing academy in Southern California and the heartbeat of Brasil Brasil Cultural Center. This art form, which was developed by the slaves as they were learning to fight and protect themselves, was disguised as a dance accompanied to music since it was illegal to practice any kind of Martial Art.
Samba: Samba is a Brazilian dance and musical genre with it’s roots in Africa & Brazil. It is recognized in the world as a symbol of Brazil and the Brazilian Carnival. Considered one of the most popular Brazilian cultural expression, Samba has become an icon of Brazilian national identity.
Afro Fusion Dance: This class is stylistic fusion of Afro dance styles varying from traditional to contemporary and popular dance genres. The class uses Afro House music and focuses on choreography and technique, so after a juicy warm-up we’ll dive into a routine. Recommended for students wanting to learn/practice choreography. Shoes optional.
Afro Dance JAM: This class combines dance styles of the Afro diaspora into a full-body, mind, spirit workout experience. We explore foundational Afro based dance movements in a high energy, continuous groove. The class emphasizes repetition, NOT choreography, so we’ll continue to flow from one movement to the next with breaks in between.
Zumba: Zumba® Fitness – When participants see a Zumba class in action, they can’t wait to give it a try. Zumba classes feature exotic rhythms set to high-energy Latin and international beats. Before participants know it, they’re getting fit and their energy levels are soaring! There’s no other fitness class like a Zumba Fitness-Party. It’s easy to do, effective and totally exhilarating, often building a deep-rooted community among returning students.
Afro-Brazilian Dance: The traditional Afro-Brazilian dances of the Orixas (Deities) are transmitted and studied through dance and rhythm. With a strong emphasis on movement, this workshop align the body, mind and soul, as the dance surfaces from the inner emotions. While slave owners banned African rituals, slaves found ways to disguise their true beliefs, using dance and music to escape and free themselves from hard times.
Forro: Forró is a sensual Brazilian partner dance that is growing world wide! Come experience it for yourself to understand the craze. For class all you need is your willingness to move and have fun. No partner needed!!! Wear your flats or tennis shoes or anything that is comfortable. We do not recommend high heels.
Kickboxing: Kickboxing is a combines martial arts and stand up combat sports based on kicking and punching. Kickboxing is practiced for self defense, general fitness, or as a contact sport.
Cardio Carnival: This class is a combination of socca, reggae, salsa and merengue with an emphasis on reggae and socca. Corey uses the basic movements from these form of dance in a follow along cardio workout. It’s design to strengthen your core and teach you how to groove to the sounds of the Carribean.
Drumming: In this powerful drumming workshop, you will gain knowledge of a broad range of rhythms from traditional and contemporary Afro-Brazilian sounds. Using the wide variety of percussion instruments, this workshop focus on the mesmerizing Candomble rhythms, the smooth Samba Reggae pulse and the energetic Samba de Roda. Let your spirits be lifted by these powerful Afro-Brazilian beats!
The Bodyful Mind: The Bodyful Mind is a movement class of deep stretch, isometrics and weight bearing movements, that takes you on a journey within to discover greater vitality, inspiration and wisdom. Your health is determined by your posture and the vitality available within the body. The body, in plumb alignment, allows the field of energy that is your life force to move unimpeded, unrestricted and uninhibited. Come and experience for yourself the power of structural alignment as taught through The Bodyful Mind. Please wear comfortable clothing for movement, bring a towel, yoga mat and a journal to log your discoveries – along with plenty of curiosity.
Brazilian Zouk: Brazilian Zouk is a dance that developed from the Brazilian dance Lambada. The dance is now combined with a variety of music, including Caribbean Zouk music, which is how the dance came to be known as Zouk. We have two Brazilian Zouk teachers: Clinton & Cristi that have just moved here from Rio de Janeiro.
